If you want the best free antivirus currently out there that is high detection and removal then avira antivir personal free is the best choice. If you want a simple basic protection then go with what others suggest - AVG free. If you are a computer expert then avast home edition is for you. It is a good free antivirus but has generates more false positives than any other antivirus.
On firewalls, Online armor free and comodo firewall pro free are the best even besting commercial ones on matousec tests (one of the more trusted independent testers even of firewall companies). If you want it simple then kerio firewall 4 or ghostwall should be enough.
AVG free AV is very popular but it's hard to understand why as it has poor detection rates and big gaps in the protection it provides. AntiVir free has far better detection rates but is prone to false-positives, it also doesn't protect against spyware. Avast is a very good, free, all-round AV. Check it out for yourself:
